Solving the Riddle of Seasonal Allergies
by Shelby Worts, ND | StoneTree Naturopathic Clinic
Conventional wisdom says that seasonal allergies go hand-in-hand with spring. You either have them or you don’t, and for the unlucky sufferers, there’s not much you can do but treat the annoying symptoms.
But is it true?
The Real Story of Allergies
What most people call “allergies” are really a sign of something else going on in the body. After all, you’re not supposed to be reacting to harmless things like pollen and grasses.
Seasonal allergies often mean that your immune system, which normally does a great job of separating the harmful from the harmless, is overwhelmed and unable to do its job.
The cause of that overwhelm is often the toxins in your air, water, food and body care products. As those toxins slowly build over time, they overwhelm your immune system, and it begins to see harmless things like pollen as threats, and creates symptoms in an attempt to purge them from your body.
Natural Solutions
Of course, taking more medications to feel better has a tendency to make you even more toxic. Instead, you can:
1. Avoid common food allergens. Food can heighten your allergic response just like pollen and ragweed. To give your immune system a break, try cutting down on wheat, dairy, corn,
soy, citrus, eggs, sugar, caffeine, preservatives and additives.
2. Use natural remedies. There are a number of over-the-counter natural remedies for allergies, including Quercetin, Luffeel®, Vitamin C, and even local honey.
How a Naturopath Can Help
To really get to the root of the problem, though, you may want to see a naturopathic doctor. They can:
- evaluate and modify your diet to eliminate common food allergens
- order lab tests to screen for food and environmental allergens
- put you on a manageable detoxification program
- examine a host of other factors which may be contributing to your symptoms such as home & work environments, stress level, water intake, hormonal imbalances, and much more
- recommend effective in-house treatments such as intravenous vitamin C therapy or colon hydrotherapy
This could be the year you bid your runny nose farewell!
